Interesting Day

Yesterday I heard words I never thought I would ever hear!
I was upstairs when I heard the dulcet tones of my better half.
"Cyril, the police are here"!!!
Then, I remembered that I rang 101 on Friday to report some blood stains outside the kitchen window. The (16 year old)! Officer did his CSI thing and concluded that a cat was the culprit! After that anti climax, we had another caller! The plumber! to fix a leaking radiator valve, after a chat about this and that, we turned out to have something in common!

A PRS old boy! Albeit from Rinteln!

People say nothing happens round here!

'tis Earth Day apparently on the morrow!...

...according to Wiki:
This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. In 1970, San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration. McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose April 22. Millions of people participated, and today Earth Day continues to be widely celebrated with events on both dates. The most common practice of celebration is to plant new trees for Earth Day.

One for Alex

The former  Collingwood boys in July 2014. All 3 Diech buildings remain and  are in use. The former Frobisher appears to be residential, but both boys houses appear to be in use as offices.

The way we were XII

A few days ago somebody complained that  Howe boys were rarely featured. Well here are a couple to demonstrate impartiality. I believe the car belonged to one of the woodwork teachers?

Herein also lies  a story that has never found it's way into all the worthy annals that have been written about PRS. Which is perhaps why they remain collections of memories as opposed to  histories?

A rare touch of sun here yesterday.....

... enough for me to take up my countryside correspondent duties again. In another week or so  we'll have leaves again, meanwhile the dipper has plucked up sufficient courage to return to the river and up on the hill the foxes are arguing over whose turn it is to wear the Ray-Bans. I'm sure all this sunshine is a bad omen.

...'twould appear I forgot...almost...apologies for my tardiness to D, whose birthday it be this day!...I can but say, in my defence, visiting rellies in celebration of a 70th birthday pushed all other thoughts aside...

Not a great photo of Ron but cannot mistake the hairstyle. (Perhaps you could enhance it Paul) Taken Spring 1959. When I first met Ron he was in a room opposite senior matron's office on the ground floor. One Saturday afternoon I was drawn towards to strumming of a guitar and was invited into his room where he showed me the famous three chords C, F and G with the occasional A minor. That was it, I came back for the summer term with a guitar.

Peter Walker

The photo was sent to us by Emily Walker of her father Peter Walker (on the right looking at it) and Keith Drummond.
Emily contacted us to say that sadly her father died last year and she recalls him talking about his time at Prince Rupert School. This is the only photo she has of her father at school. Emily doesn't know the date the photo was taken but we have contacted Keith who also doesn't know the date but he was in Rodney in 1955 for a couple of terms and went back from 1957 - 1959. Emily says that her father was in Jever at this time
We presume that Peter was also in Rodney during his time at PRS.
If anyone has any memories of Peter or Keith, please contact Barbara Steels personally at chairman@prs-wilhelmshaven.co.uk so she can pass them onto Emily.

The Way We Were XI

A sad day for me to log onto the Blog and discover the death of my old friend Ron.
We were brought together by a sense of rebellion and a love of rock n' roll. In many ways they were one and the same thing. In 1958 stuck in its own particular time warp there were many at PRS who still saw rock n' roll as being slightly unseemly. Ron  was part of the little enclave in the room next to the Housemaster's office. They were housed there as part of a final warning (the previous term they had been caught going over the wire at night.) From there via a record player  and an ingenious system of wires and loudspeakers they broadcast a continuous selection of rock to the house during the daylight hours.
Central to Ron's character was his hairstyle. Aided by copious dollops of Brylcreem it was designed to emulate as closely as possible the King.  The growing of sideburns was expressly forbidden and Ron and I had had many battles with the German barber, the housemaster and the overbearing prefects.
Ron always had a cheerful smile and an encouraging word and on numerous occasions would save me from my darker moments as I battled with the tyranny of Drake House. He was a superb gymnast and could pull off backward flick-flacks, fully clothed with an armful of books at a moment's notice.
For many months our favourite music was the newly released LP Loving You and this morning I shall play his favourite tracks in his memory:  Party ,  Mean Woman Blues (usually dedicated to a sultry girl in Rodney who Ron made it his ambition to 'fix me up' with) Hot Dog and Got a Lot of Livin' to Do. Ron with his supple legs and body could even make the King look arthritic when doing impersonations. A sad loss of an old friend.

The Way We Were X

Topless photo alert. Avert your eyes Helga. Positively the last of the Drake wrestlers.

Jag gone.

Happy Easter everyone.  I have no pics of dormitory action to add, so instead here is my ex-Jag - just sold as I divest myself of all things high-maintenance.
Its getting cool in Canberra - down to the low 20s, but by the end of April I'll have moved to sunny Brisbane.   Beers from Down Under.

Wish ...and it will come!!

A sunny Thursday, April 2nd, temperature was -8celcius when this was taken this morning at 8.30.  As you can see we have a lot of white stuff to get rid of, hopefully before the end of the month!!  Anyway, getting the NL has made the day go by very nicely.  Thanks to all involved.  ( little different outlook to Pauls lovely picture)!!

The Way We Were IX

More Drake boys wrestling. The photos were taken by a passing monitor (Lofty) who had been dispatched to see what all the ruck was about. Hence we were made to wear caps.

The Way We Were VIII

More Drake boys wrestling... I think it's called homoerotic experiences these days..
