I am a romantic and this made my eyes water, Alf was in the trenches at the time... I have 3 such postcards and he says where he is... Am going to find out what was going on 3 & 4 jan 1916, so very tragic the whole of the war.  Alfs love for his wife and the importantance of letters from home is so very obvious in his writing... He wrote in pencil too like we all used to and I don't suppose ink was available.

Hand me my brown trousers............

A man of our times R.I.P.

Roger Lloyd-Pack, the British actor known to millions as slow-witted road sweeper Trigger in BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses, has died aged 69.

Well-known for his rubbery face and lugubrious delivery, he also appeared as Owen Newitt in The Vicar of Dibley.

Born in Islington, north London in 1944, he was the son of Hammer horror actor Charles Lloyd-Pack and the father of actress Emily Lloyd.

His agent confirmed he died of pancreatic cancer on Wednesday night.

Truculent mutt!

An epiphany!

Suddenly, it all makes sense! Gay marriage and marijuana are being legalised at the same time. Leviticus 20:13 says, "If a man lays on another man, he should be stoned." It's just a question of interpretation...........  ;-0

Apropos nada

There is a rather nice album currently available called 'Foreverly'. It's recorded by Billy Joe Armstrong and Nora Jones (with whom, in another life.............oh! Forget it). The music is stuff they grew up with and it's harmonised as the Everly Brothers sing. I regularly have Everlys singing in my ear when I walk the dog each morning. Good music and stuff I cut my guitar lack-of-skills with back in the day!

Polar Vortex is resposible for this!!

  • FACEBOOK PIC OF THE DAY: This is the St. Joseph Lighthouse on Lake Michigan. Today, it is encased in ice as the Midwest is hit with a "polar vortex", causing wind chills to reach -50 degrees.
  • I am not complaining about our -35c windchill ever again!  Yesterday evening the temperature went up to 8celcius, today colder and the windchill is back, going down to -13c this evening, windchill of - 27c.  But I am NOT complaining, just commenting:-))

food for thought.

Time is like a river.

You cannot touch water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many types of gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.

There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down. The vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say out loud while still crying, "I never seen nothing like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

How true is this.....

You know, time has  a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.   It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my  new life with my mate.  Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I  wonder where all the years went.  I know that I lived them all.  I  have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is - the 'back nine' of my life and it catches me by surprise.  How did I get here so  fast?  Where did the years go and where did my youth go?  I  remember vividly seeing older people through the years and thinking that
those older people were years away from me and that 'I was only on the first hole' and the 'back nine' was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But,  here it is . . .my friends are retired and getting grey.  They move slower and I see an older person now.  Some are in better and some worse shape than me, but, I see the great change.  Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant . . . but like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become.  Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day!  And taking a nap is not a treat anymore . . . it's mandatory!  Cause if I don't on my own free will, I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!  But, at least I know, that though I’m on the 'back
nine,' and I'm not sure how long it will last, this I know for sure, that when it's over on this earth . . . it's over.  A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets.  There are things I wish I hadn't done . . ..things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done.  It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not on the 'back nine' yet . . .let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think.  So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly!  Don't put things off too long!  Life goes by quickly.  So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you’re on the 'back nine' or not!  You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life . . .so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember, and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after.  Make it a fantastic one.

Remember, "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver."

~Your kids are becoming you . . .but your grandchildren are perfect.

~Going out is good . . . Coming home is better.

~You forget names . . .But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew

~You realize you're never going to be really good
 at anything . . . especially golf.

~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that
  you don't care to do them anymore.

~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed.  It's called "pre-sleep.

~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..

~You tend to use more 4 letter words . . . "what?" . . . "when?". . . ” ???

~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.

~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless."

~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.

~Everybody whispers.

~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet . . . 2 of which you will never wear.

~~~But Old is good in some things ~~~ Old Songs, Old Movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS
Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!"  Send this on to other "Old Friends" and let them laugh in AGREEMENT
It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.
